翻訳家Polly BartonのFifty Soundsで面白いなと思った、ヴィトゲンシュタインの思想を紹介している箇所。ことばの「意味」を定めることの限界を人間のアイデンティティのアナロジーで考えるという。ひとりの人間に散文的に記述できるような「性格」が存在すると考えることがそもそも欺瞞かもしれず、内気とされる人間も仲がいい友人の前では饒舌になるように、多面体のそれぞれの面がその場その場で観測されるにすぎないかもしれない。こうした視点からすると、どんな英和辞書も和英辞書も、折衷的なものでしかありえない。

(…) it is one of Wittgenstein’s key tenets in the Investigations that there is no unitary ‘sense’ of a word as such, no ineffable, alchemic essence which appears before us as those conversant with it. What we think of as the soul of a word is really just the conjunction of its uses, in much the same way that a person’s identity could be said to be the sum of the myriad ways in which they perform.
