2017年にハーバード大学で開講されていたGirl Culture, Media, and Japanという授業のシラバスが公開されていて、コース説明だけでも無茶苦茶におもしろい(→Link)。

まずコース通しての教科書はOptionalを除くと岡崎京子『Pink』、吉本ばなな、萩尾望都、吉屋信子、嶽本野ばら『下妻物語』。

センセイによってディスカッション用のトピックが定期的にアップされていたのだが(各週のa discussion post参照)、その中には「マリア様がみてる」(アニメ版)、尾崎翠「第七官界彷徨」、大島弓子『綿の国星』などが登場。ずば抜けてオモシロいと思ったのは、以下のdiscussion question(引用内のさらに引用は『Pink』の作者あとがき)。

In her Afterword to Pink, the author Okazaki Kyoko refers to the manga as a story about “love” and “capitalism." How do you think the story of Yumi in Pink connect love, capitalism, work and prostitution?   Here's an excerpt from the Afterword:　This is a story about the everyday life and adventures, the “love” and “capitalism” of a girl who was born., raised and “normally wrecked (like Zelda Fitzgerald?) in a boring town called Tokyo. . . All work is prostitution. . And all work is love as well. . . “Love” isn’t that tepid and lukewarm thing people like to talk about . . . It’s a tough, severe, scary and cruel monster. So is “capitalism”. But its lame to be just spooked by them . . . . If you just fearlessly dive in, strangely enough you can swim all right! . . . The difficulty of leading a “normally” happy life plagues everyone in present-day Tokyo. But me, I’m not afraid of “happiness”. Because I’m a Tokyo gal through and through.

単行本『Pink』の帯に大きく印刷された「愛と資本主義」という文句のインパクトは今も強烈だと思うけれど、この質問はつまり、この惹句の意味を学生に考えさせようというのである。なおこの授業は、コース説明に「No prior knowledge of Japanese language or history is expected.」とあるように日本の現代史の知識は前提としていないもよう。

さらにひとつ、画面を眺めていてニヤリとしてしまったこと。コース後半の成績評価については、学生はエッセイか創作かを選ぶことができる。ここでシラバスにおいて、創作の方を選んだ生徒に対して「a creatively hybridized girl fiction(ハイブリッドな少女小説)」の好例として森奈津子の怪笑ジェンダーSF「西城秀樹のおかげです」が紹介されている！この授業、学生たちのバックグラウンドの違いはあっても、活溌な議論の絶えない楽しく濃やかな時間であったにちがいない。
